Bangladesh Cricket |Test Victories of Bangladesh

Bangladesh played its first Test match in 2000/01 against India. It was a one-match series, with the lone match being played in Dhaka. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat. Bangladesh put up a spirited show in the first innings and went on to make 400 runs on the board, with the help of 145 from Aminul Islam. In reply, India made 429 in their first innings. But Bangladesh lost their way in the second innings, as they were bundled out for 91. India chased down the target with the loss of just 1 wicket. Since then Bangladesh has managed to win 22 test matches in their test history. Bangladesh Cricket team's most test victories came against Zimbabwe. They have won 8 out of 18 matches against Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, they managed to win 5 out of 22 test matches against West Indies. They are yet to win a test match against India and South Africa.

In this article, we discuss some of the Bangladesh Test Victories.

Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh (2005): 

The first test victory for Bangladesh came in 2005 against Zimbabwe at Chattogram. In the first test, Batting first Bangladesh made 488 with their captain being the highest scorer making 94. In reply, Zimbabwe made 312. Bangladesh declared their second innings at 204/9. In the second innings, Zimbabwe was shot out for 154 despite Hamilton Mazakadza making a half-century. Bangladesh won the match by a huge margin of 226 runs. Enamul Haque jnr who took 6 wickets in the second innings of Zimbabwe was declared the player of the match. Bangladesh drew the second match of the series to clinch their first-ever test series victory.

Bangladesh Vs West Indies (2009):

Bangladesh won both the test matches of the series against West Indies in 2009. It was a welcoming result for the Bangladesh cricketing fans. In the first test, Bangladesh made 238 in the first innings. In reply, West Indies made 307. But despite making a healthy lead in the first innings, West Indies could not capitalize on it. Bangladesh fought back well and made 345 in their second innings and West Indies were all out for 181 in the last innings of the match. Bangladesh won the match by 95 runs. Tamim Iqbal was adjudged the player of the match for his 128 runs in the second innings.

In the second match of the series, West Indies made just 237 in their first innings. Bangladesh were all out for 232 in their first innings. West Indies were once again all-out for 209 in their second innings. Bangladesh managed to chase down the target with the loss of just 6 wickets. They made 217/6 with the help of a 96* from Shakib Al Hasan. He was the player of the series for his tally of 159 runs and 13 wickets.

Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh (2013): 

Much was expected from Bangladesh after their 2-0 victory against West Indies in 2009. But the fans had to wait until 2013 to witness another test victory for Bangladesh. In 2013 Zimbabwe defeated Bangladesh, in the first match of the series by a huge margin of 335 runs. But Bangladesh came back strongly in the second match of the series. Bangladesh made 391 in the first innings and folded Zimbabwe innings for 282 runs. In the second innings, Bangladesh declared their innings at 291/9 and Zimbabwe were all out for 257 runs handing Bangladesh a 143-run victory. Bangladesh drew the series 1-1.

In the next series against New Zealand even though they could not seal a victory, Bangladesh managed to draw both the matches of the series.

Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh (2014): 

It was a much-improved performance by Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in 2014. They won the test series 3-0. In the first match of the series, Zimbabwe made 240 in the first innings, aided by half-century from Sikandar Raza. In reply, Bangladesh were all out for 254 in the first innings. Taijul Islam took 8 Zimbabwean wickets in the second innings and they were restricted to 114. Bangladesh made 101 with a loss of 7 wickets and registered yet another test victory against Zimbabwe.

In the second match of the series, Bangladesh made 433 runs in the first innings, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan scored centuries in the first innings. Zimbabwe also put up a great show in the first innings. They reached 368 runs, with Hamilton Masakadza and  Regis Chakabva scoring centuries. Bangladesh declared the second innings at 248/9. Zimbabwe could not repeat the heroics in the second innings and they were all out for 151 runs. Bangladesh won the match by 162 runs. Shakib Al Hasan was the man of the match for his century in the first innings and 5 wicket scalps in each of the innings.

Bangladesh raised their level further up in the third match of the series. Batting first, Bangladesh made a healthy 503, with Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes making centuries. Zimbabwe in reply, made 374 runs. With a healthy first-innings lead, Bangladesh declared their second innings at 319/5. Mominul Haque scored 131 off 189 deliveries. Zimbabwe had to score an unlikely 449 runs in the final innings of the match. But their innings ended at 262 runs.

So Bangladesh had won all three matches of the series and the score-line 3-0 was a great source of joy for the entire Bangladesh cricketing fans.

England Vs Bangladesh (2016):

After the heroics of Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in 2014, their next inspirational performance came two years later in 2016 against England. In the first match of the series, Bangladesh lost to England by a small margin of 22 runs. But it was a close-fought battle. Taking inspiration from their performance in the first match, Bangladesh played really well in the second match of the series held at Mirpur. Batting first, Bangladesh could only manage 220, despite a century from Tamim Iqbal. But they did well to restrict England at 244 in their first innings. In the second innings, Bangladesh batsmen put up a better show and reached 296 runs. England's chase began well, and at one stage they were 100 without loss of a wicket. But once the openers Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett were dismissed after making half-centuries, other English batsmen had no clue about the deliveries from Mehidy Hazan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan. They picked up 6 and 4 wickets respectively and England innings ended at 164 runs and Bangladesh won the match by 108 runs.

Sri Lanka Vs Bangladesh (2017):

In the first match of the two-test test series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh started off wobbly and they lost by a huge margin of 259 runs. But they came back strongly in the second match of the series. Sri Lanka batted first in the second match of the series held at Colombo. Sri Lanka made 338 in their first innings. Dinesh Chandimal scored a century in the innings. Bangladesh, in reply, made 467 with the help of a century from Shakib Al Hasan. Sri Lanka made 319 in their second innings. Their opener Dimuth Karunaratne was the top scorer with 126. Bangladesh had to make 191 in the last innings to win the match. At one point they were 130/2 and seemed to reach their target with ease. But then Bangladesh lost some quick wickets and were 162/5. But they managed to reach the target with 4 wickets in hand. Tamim Iqbal top scored with 82 runs in the second innings for Bangladesh.

Australia Vs Bangladesh (2017): 

2017 was a great year in the test history of Bangladesh. They managed to make yet another important achievement in test cricket, when they defeated Australia in the first match of two test series in 2017. In the first match held at Mirpur, Bangladesh made 260 in the first innings with Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan making half-centuries. It was not a huge score. But the Bangladesh bowlers managed to dismiss Australia for 217, with Shakib Al Hasan taking a fifer. In the second innings, Bangladesh were all out for 221. Once again Tamim Iqbal was the top scorer with 78 runs. Australia had to chase 265 in their last innings. Even though Australia lost Matt Renshaw and Usman Khawaja cheaply, David Warner made a gritty 112 runs to keep Australia in the hunt. But Shakib Al Hasan took another fifer and the Australian chase ended up at 244. Bangladesh won the match by 20 runs.

Unfortunately, Bangladesh lost the second match of the series.

Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh (2018):

Zimbabwe won the first match of the series by a huge margin of 151 runs. But it was an altogether different performance from Bangladesh in the second match of the series. Batting first they made 522/7 with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring a double century and Mominul Haque scoring a century. Zimbabwe made 304 in their first innings. Brenden Tayor made 110 for Zimbabwe. In the second innings, Mahmadullah scored a century and Bangladesh declared the innings at 224/6. Chasing a target of 443 runs, Zimbabwe were all out for 224. Brenden Taylor once again scored a century in the second innings as well.

West Indies Vs Bangladesh (2018):

Bangladesh lost both test matches in 2018 when Bangladesh toured West Indies. Now, the West Indies were visiting Bangladesh in November 2018 and Bangladesh was ready to return the favor. Bangladesh won the two Test match series 2-0. The first test match of the series was held at Chattogram. Winning the toss, Bangladesh elected to bat first. Mominul Haque scored a century to help Bangladesh score 324 in their first innings. Jomel Warrican took 4 wickets for West Indies in the innings. Despite half-centuries from Shimron Hetmeyer and Shane Dowrich, West Indies' first innings ended up at 246. Nayeem Hasan took 5 wickets for 61 runs. The 76-run first innings lead for Bangladesh was going to be a handy one. West Indies ended the Bangladesh second innings at 125. Devendra Bishoo and Roston Chase took 4 and 3 wickets each for West Indies. West Indies had to chase 204 runs in the last innings. But the wicket was aiding the spinners. West Indies' second innings ended at 139 runs. Bangladesh won by 64 runs. Taijul Islam took 6 wickets for 33 runs. For West Indies, Sunil Ambris (43) and Jomel Warrican (41) provided some resistance in the West Indies lineup. But that was not enough to ensure their victory.

In the second match of the series at Mirpur, Bangladesh put up a strong batting display. In the first innings, they scored 508, with Mahmudullah scoring a century. Bangladesh bowlers also put up a strong display in West Indies' first innings. West Indies could only make 111. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 7 wickets for 58 runs. West Indies were made to follow on. But the deficit in the first innings was huge and it was always going to be an uphill task for West Indies. In the second innings, West Indies were all out for 213. Shimron Hetmeyer top scored with 93 runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 5 wickets for 59 runs. Bangladesh won the match by 184 runs and an inning.

Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh (2019): 

Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh for 1 test match in 2019. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Craig Ervine scored a century to help Zimbabwe reach 265 in the first innings. In reply, Bangladesh scored 560/6 and declared their innings. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a double century (203), and Mominul Haque scored a century. The large first-innings deficit hurt Zimbabwe and it Zimbabwe batsmen had a lot of work to do in their second innings. But Bangladesh bowlers had other plans and they ended up the Zimbabwe's second innings at 189. Bangladesh won by an innings and 106 runs. 

Zimbabwe Vs Bangladesh (2021):

Bangladesh toured Zimbabwe in 2021. Zimbabwe had a chance to get some redemption from the recent losses in Test matches against Bangladesh. But it was not going to be that way. Bangladesh won the only test of the series by 220 runs. Batting first, riding upon the century from Mahamadullah (150), Bangladesh reached a total of 468 in their first innings. In reply, Zimbabwe could only make 276, despite being 175/1 at one stage of the game. Takudzwanashe and Brendan Taylor scored 87 and 81 respectively for Zimbabwe. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 5 wickets in the first innings. Bangladesh declared their first innings at 284/1, with Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto scoring centuries for Bangladesh. Zimbabwe was given an improbable target of 477 runs. Zimbabwe's run chase got as far as only 256 runs. Brendan Taylor top-scored for Zimbabwe with 92 in the second innings. Mehidy Hasan Mieaz and Taskin Ahmed took 4 wickets apiece for Bangladesh.

 New Zealand Vs Bangladesh (2022): 

Mangladesh's tour of New Zealand started off on a good note when they won the first match of the series held at Mount Maunganui. But New Zealand came back strongly in the second match and the series was drawn 1-1. In the first match, batting first New Zealand made 326 runs with the help of 122 from Devon Conway. Bangladesh made 458 runs despite none of their batsmen scoring a century. But Mahmudul Hasan Joy (78), Najmul Hossain Shanto (64), Mominil Haque (88), and Litton Das (86) scored half-centuries. In the second innings, Ebadot Hossain took 6 wickets for Bangladesh and restricted New Zealand to 169 runs. Bangladesh chased down the target of 40 runs with the loss of 2 wickets in their second innings.

Bangladesh Vs Ireland (2023):

In 2023 Ireland visited Bangladesh to play a lone test series. Winning the toss, Ireland captain Andy Balbirine elected to bat first. Harry Tector scored a half century for Ireland and they scored 214 in their first innings. Taijul Islam took 5/58 in the first innings. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a century to help Bangladesh reach 369 in their first innings. Ireland bowler Andy McBrine took 6 wickets. In the second innings, Ireland made 292 runs, with Lorcan Tucker scoring 108. Bangladesh had to make 138 runs to register a victory. They chased down the total with the loss of 3 wickets.

Bangladesh Vs Afghanistan (2023):

Bangladesh won the 1-match series 1-0. The only match of the series was held at Mirpur. Batting first, Bangladesh managed to score 382. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 146 runs in the innings. In reply, Afghanistan could only score 146 runs, with only 4 of their batsmen crossing the double digits. Ebadot Hossain picked 4 wickets in the innings. Bangladesh batsmen showed no mercy for Afghanistan bowlers in the second innings as they went on to score 425 with the loss of just 4 wickets. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque scored centuries to help Bangladesh reach a huge total. Afghanistan had to chase down 662 for an improbable victory. Afghanistan could only make 115, with their batsmen failing once again in the match. Only, 3 batsmen crossed double digits with Rahmat Shah (30) being the top scorer. Bangladesh won the match by a margin of 546 runs.

New Zealand Vs Bangladesh (2023):

Two test match series were drawn 1-1. Bangladesh won the first match and New Zealand won the second match of the series. In the first match, Bangladesh made 310 in the first innings, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy being the top scorer at 86. In reply, New Zealand scored 317, with Kane Williamson scoring a century. New Zealand gained a slender 7-run lead in the first innings. In the second Innings, Bangladesh made 338 with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto making a century. Chasing a target of 332 runs, New Zealand were all-out for 181. Daryl Mitchell top-scored for New Zealand in the second innings. He scored 120 balls 58 runs. Taijul Islam picked 6 wickets for Bangladesh in the second innings.

Pakistan Vs Bangladesh (2024):

Bangladesh visited Pakistan in 2024 for a 2-test series. Surprisingly, Pakistan lost both their test matches in the series and Bangladesh completed a whitewash 2-0 of the series. In the first test held at Rawalpindi, Pakistan batting first made 448/6, thanks to the centuries from Saud Shakeel and Muhammed Rizwan. Interestingly, Pakistan captain Shan Masood, declared the Pakistan innings when Rizwan was batting at 177*. Later on, this declaration cost dearly for Pakistan. In reply, Bangladesh made 565, with the help of a century from Mushfiqur Rahim (191) and half-centuries from Shadman Islam (93), Mominul Haque(50), Litton Das (56), and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (77). In the second innings, Pakistan were all-out for 146 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz picking 4 wickets. Bangladesh made the required 30 runs without any loss of wickets and they achieved a 10 wickets victory.

In the second match of the series, Pakistan made 274 batting first.  Saim Ayub (58), Shan Masood (57), and Salman Agha (54) made half-centuries. Bangladesh at one stage was 26/6 in the first innings. Litton Das (138) scored a century and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (78) scored a half-century, to lift the Bangladesh score to 262.  Khurram Shahzad picked 6 wickets for Pakistan. In the second innings, Pakistan scored 172, with Salman Agha (47) being the top scorer. Hasan Mahmud picked up 5 wickets for Bangladesh. Chasing a target of 185 runs, Bangladesh crossed the ropes with the loss of just 4 wickets. Bangladesh completed a 2-0 victory in the series.

Bangladesh Vs West Indies (2024):

Bangladesh lost the first match of the series by 201 runs. Bangladesh made a strong reply in the second match of the series and drew the series 1-1. In the second match of the series at Kingston, Bangladesh were bundled out for 164 in the first innings. Shadman Islam top scored with 64, while only 4 Bangladesh batsmen managed to reach double figures. Jayden Seales scalped 4 wickets in the first innings. But West Indies could not utilize the advantage and were all-out for 146. West Indies were 84/1 at one stage of the innings, but Nahid Rana took 5 wickets to restrict them to 146. In the second innings, Jaker Ali top scored with 91, as Bangladesh reached 268. West Indies were set a target of 287 runs. But Taijul Islam took 5 West Indies wickets to restrict them to a score of 185. Bangladesh won the match by 101 runs.
